Helping raise tomorrow's productive, engaged citizens starts with thinking about how to support them today. And while it's never too late to get on the right track, we believe in getting an early start. That's why we support children from an early age in their schools, playgrounds, healthcare facilities, homes and communities.
Through partnerships with organizations such as Kids Help Phone, True Sport Foundation, Junior Achievement, Allô Prof and Computers for Schools, we help Canadian children overcome difficulties, build self-esteem, play, learn and grow in new ways, regardless of the challenges.
As a responsible provider of Internet connectivity service, we share the public's concern over the alarming increase in the amount of sexual exploitation of kids on the Internet. That's why we are making significant investments in cybersafety, working with police, industry, government and interest groups to find solutions. We support initiatives that help educate children and parents, and facilitate information sharing in order to shut down offensive sites and help put sexual predators behind bars. Investments in initiatives like cybertip.ca, the University of Toronto's Cyberabuse research project, and Media Awareness Network are starting to show results. For instance, after its first year of operation, cybertip.ca has led to 17 arrests and the shutting down of more than 950 sites.
Bell Canada partners with the Ontario Provincial Police in helping to notify the public of any Amber Alert. An Amber Alert is a warning system to immediately alert the public of abducted children. This is done through media announcements, highway signs and point-of-purchase retail displays.
In 2005, Bell Canada donated $12.2 million to youth enrichment and cybersafety initiatives.
