Environment

"You should let people know what you're doing as a positive contribution to the environment and society."

Shrinking our Environmental Footprint

Our environmental responsibility: do everything in our power to leave a cleaner world for the next generation.

As Canada's leading communications company we know that our corporate "footprint" will never disappear altogether. But we believe we can minimize the impact of our operations on the environment to leave a smaller mark. From providing green-friendly solutions to our customers to the judicious management of our consumption, air emissions and waste, our environmental investments today are equally investments in our future.

Some of the ways in which we are safeguarding the natural environment include:

  • In 2005, we improved the energy consumption of our vehicle fleet by 4.3%, thanks primarily to a successful anti-idling awareness campaign and the use of our telematics technology. In addition, alternative energy solutions such as the use of wind and solar power brought savings of 3.37 million kWh in 2005.

  • In support of the Kyoto Protocol we have implemented measures that help address climate change and we recently established a new policy and key objective to reduce greenhouse gases by 15% by 2012.

  • We continue to raise the bar on our already-successful efforts to reduce waste to landfill, targeting an additional 5% in waste diversion by 2008.

  • Our properties and equipment are diligently managed to prevent leaks, spills or releases of contaminants into the environment. 84% of our petroleum storage tanks are now above ground.

  • To minimize the impact of our telecommunications network on the environment we have entered into a partnership for joint-use Pole Light Pedestals that house telecommunications, cable TV, and electrical wiring in an integrated unit.
