Noise from our operations can originate from stand-by generators, air conditioners and cooling fans. We are sensitive to the potential effects of this noise in the communities in which we operate and have initiated several measures to minimize it.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES
- We adopted a noise management policy in 2001 which outlines our commitment to minimize noise from our equipment that poses a possible nuisance.
- We implemented noise guidelines for the installation of new equipment in 2002 that specify the maximum noise level at property limits and ways to reduce noise levels when required. All new network equipment must meet the noise reduction guidelines, and is systematically measured for noise levels after installation. It is also our objective to ensure that Bell's operational equipment meets the new guidelines.
Technical Solutions
- In previous years, we used various techniques to reduce noise, such as the use of variable speed cooling fans and sound enclosures, or by modifying the equipment on existing outside plant network cabinets, huts and vaults.
- In 2005, we reduced noise from air conditioning units used for telecommunications equipment and buildings by installing sound-proof walls, variable speed cooling fans or by modifying the ventilation system. We also reduced the noise emitted from one back-up generator by improving the efficiency of the muffler and the air intake and output valves.
- Also in 2005, we improved our public complaints process to ensure that noise-related issues are effectively addressed.
