CTV Newsnet Anchor Dismissed

TORONTO,Jan. 17 2000 --Offensive remarks that were broadcast on CTV
Newsnet Saturday morning by probationary news anchor Avery Haines were a
serious violation of CTV's policies governing the conduct of its employees.
Accordingly, Henry Kowalski, Sr. Vice-President News, today informed Ms.
Haines that her employment with CTV News has been terminated, effective
immediately.
"The nature of her comments, did not leave CTV News with any
alternative," said Kowalski.
"The public must know that CTV takes this kind of behaviour as absolutely
unacceptable," he added.
"Ms. Haines had shown considerable journalistic talent in her short time
with us and we regret that this action was necessary. However, her remarks
were disrespectful and unprofessional and cannot be excused."
Saturday, at the request of CTV, Ms. Haines subsequently apologized twice
on air, stating that her remarks did not reflect her opinions nor those of the
network.
An investigation into the incident is continuing.
