Bell named greenest company in Canada and 13th in the world by Newsweek

MONTREAL, Oct. 30, 2012 /CNW Telbec/ - Bell has been named one of the World's Greenest Companies and is the only Canadian company included in the prestigious list compiled by U.S. newsmagazine Newsweek and two leading research firms.

Established in 2009, the Green Rankings comprehensively assess the environmental performance of the largest publicly traded companies in North America and around the world. Two leading environmental research organizations, Trucost and Sustainalytics, collaborated with Newsweek to rank companies based on the size of their environmental footprint, the effectiveness of their environmental policies and practices, and their transparency in disclosing their environmental impact.

"Bell is delighted to receive this recognition for the hard work of our entire team in safeguarding the environment while we deliver Canada's best communications services," said David Wells, Bell's Executive Vice President of Corporate Services. "Consumers have made clear that the environment means a lot to them, and we're proud that Bell's extensive environmental commitment ranks us with the greenest companies in the world."

Bell placed 13th in the list of the World's Greenest Companies, which also included major international brands like IBM, BT Group (British Telecom), SAP and Nokia. In its analysis of Bell's environmental performance, Newsweek said "The Canadian telecom estimates that the bills they issued electronically in 2011 saved some 33,000 trees and 4,100 tons of greenhouse-gas emissions. And since 2003, the company has collected more than a million phones that would have otherwise ended up in landfills."

As a result of its focus on environmental issues, Bell was also the first Canadian communications company to achieve ISO 14001 certification for its environmental management system, in 2009.
