BELL CANADA: YEAR 2000 ROLLOVER UPDATE

    OTTAWA, Jan. 1st /CNW/ - Bell Canada is pleased to report that it has
detected no major incidents on its voice or data systems, related to the Year
2000 rollover.  This includes its wireline services offered by Bell Québec and
Bell Ontario, its IP/Broadband Network and large business telecom services
offered by Bell Nexxia, its wireless services offered through Bell Mobility,
Sympatico(TM) service offered by Bell ActiMedia, and satellite services
offered by Telesat Canada, TMI Communications and Bell ExpressVu.
    However, Bell Canada will continue to monitor its networks closely.
    Bell Canada has been preparing for the rollover to 2000 since 1996, and
has invested approximately $350 million with the objective of ensuring that
its systems, network elements, products and services are Year 2000-compliant.
There are more than 4,500 employees working a special Year 2000 shift to
ensure that if problems arise, they are detected early and fixed as quickly as
possible.
    Bell Canada provides a full range of communications services to
customers, including wired and wireless local and long distance telephone
services, Internet access, high-speed data services and directories.  Bell
Canada, its telecom partners and subsidiaries provide services through 13.6
million access lines, including 11 million in Ontario and Québec.  Bell Canada
also serves more than 2.3 million wireless customers through Bell Mobility.
