BELL CANADA TAKES THE LEAD TO CONVINCE QUEBEC SMALL BUSINESSES TO MAKE THE INTERNET A PRIORITY

MONTREAL, Jan. 24 /CNW/ - Bell is taking action to encourage Québec small
businesses to take the first step towards e-commerce, namely, Internet access.
Following on the heels of the resounding success of the KeyPak(TM) bundle,
Bell is now offering one free month of service including, among other things,
unlimited Internet access. Using this simple, comprehensive and economical
bundle of services, customers will be able to access a wealth of information,
monitor the competition, keep an eye on market prices, establish new business
contacts and carry out electronic transactions. In addition, the bundle
consists of business services that will enable companies to better manage
their customer contacts and, most important, to do business quicker!
``Bell is proposing concrete solutions to ensure that small businesses
won't miss the e-commerce boat. Québec has some catching up to do as far as
Internet connections are concerned. To accomplish that, we want to induce
companies to make the Internet a priority by giving them access to that
indispensable business tool. With this unique offer, the only one of its type
in the country, Bell Canada confirms its leadership as the number one company
with respect to Internet solutions for small business,'' points out Pierre
Pugliese, Vice-president - Marketing (Québec Business Market).
By encouraging Québec small businesses to acquire Internet access, Bell
is acting upon one of the primary recommendations of the Report of the
Canadian E-business Opportunities Roundtable. The report discusses the serious
risk that ``Canada will miss the e-commerce boat unless companies, governments
and consumers act quickly''.
Bell Canada markets a full range of communication services, including
local and long-distance telephone services, both wired and wireless, Internet
access services, high-speed data transmission services and directory services.
Together with its telecom partners and subsidiaries, Bell Canada has 13.6
million access lines, of which 11 million are in Québec and Ontario. Bell
Canada also serves over 2.3 million wireless customers through BELL MOBILITY.
Bell Canada is owned by BCE Inc. of Montréal (which has an 80% share) and by
SBC Communications Inc. of Texas (20%). Bell Canada has a web site at the
address http://www.bell.ca. Press releases, speeches and informational
materials may be found in the Newsroom. The company's e-mail address is
