AGIS Boosts IP Network Performance and Reliability with Nortel Networks Versalar Switch Routers and Preside Portfolio

Transforms ``Old World'' Router Network Into High-Performance Vehicle
    for Next-Generation Service Delivery

BOSTON, Jan. 11 /CNW/ - Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) today announces
that AGIS, a global Tier-1, facilities-based Internet access and data service
provider, has begun deployment of 36 Nortel Networks' Versalar Switch Routers
and the Preside service-enabling software portfolio -- transforming its IP
network from a best-effort network based on ``Old World'' routers to a
revenue-generating, high-performance network with the reliability of a
traditional telephony network.
``In order for AGIS to deliver new, value-added Internet services, and
meet growing bandwidth demands, we need a solution designed to deliver the
scalability, reliability and economics that -- until today -- were
unattainable in IP networks,'' said Gary Disher, Chief Technology Officer of
AGIS. ``After extensive testing, we selected Nortel Networks Versalar Switch
Routers. With hardware, software and supporting services designed specifically
for the service provider business environment, Nortel Networks allows us to
reduce networking cost while improving the reliability and capability of the
The Versalar Switch Routers will replace AGIS' current multi-tier routing
architecture, built on ``Old World'' routing technology, with a
state-of-the-art edge and core networking solution. The new solution will
require fewer network devices, reduce networking costs and management
complexity, and increase higher network reliability.
``The Versalar Switch Routers play an important role in Nortel Networks
Optical Internet strategy which enables our customers to build a better
Internet -- a high-performance Internet that is more profitable, reliable and
secure than ever before,'' said Ilan Carmi, vice president and general
manager, IP Infrastructure, Nortel Networks. ``We are very pleased that AGIS
shares our network vision and that, together, we can build a world-class IP
network built for the delivery of exciting, new Internet services.''

    Leading-edge Solution

Unlike ``Old World'' routers, the Versalar Switch Router 15000 and 25000
are designed from the ground up to meet service provider requirements and to
render the service providers' IP networks more profitable. Positioned at the
edge of the network, the Versalar Switch Router 15000 is optimized to support,
at line speed, advanced mission critical services, including Quality of
Service, Class of Service, policy management, and usage based accounting.
Together with Nortel Networks' Preside service-enabling software, AGIS will
have the tools and real-time information necessary to easily create, deliver,
manage and bill for new, value-added Internet services. The Versalar Switch
Router 15000 is available today.
The Versalar Switch Router 25000 is designed for core applications,
providing up to 480 Gbit/s of throughput. In the future, in conjunction with
Nortel Networks' OPTera Packet Solution, the Versalar Switch Router 25000 will
handle speeds up to 19.2 terabits per second and ultimately support hundreds
of terabits per second. A key component of Nortel Networks' breakthrough
OPTera Packet Solution, the Versalar Switch Router 25000 is scheduled to be
generally available in the first quarter of this year.
