Bell Canada renews title sponsorship of Bell Canadian Open - Tournament to be held in Vancouver in 2005 -
VANCOUVER,April 3 2003 --The Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA) and
Bell Canada announced today that Bell has renewed its title sponsorship of the
Bell Canadian Open. The three-year extension is effective from 2004 to 2006.
"The RCGA is pleased that Bell Canada has extended its sponsorship and
support of the Bell Canadian Open," said Stephen Ross, RCGA Executive
Director. "Bell has been a strong partner for the past nine years and we look
forward to continuing our relationship through 2006. With their commitment to
excellence and reputation as a leader in the communications industry, Bell is
a perfect complement to both the RCGA and golf in Canada."
"The Bell Canadian Open has a rich tradition, is internationally renowned
and is the only Canadian stop on the PGA Tour. We're pleased to play such a
key role in this prestigious event, which gives Canadians the opportunity to
see the best golfers in the world competing in our national open
championship," said John Sheridan, President, Bell Canada.
The RCGA and Bell Canada also confirmed today that the tournament will
move to Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club in Vancouver in 2005 and will be
played in the province of Quebec in 2006.
"A key element of our strategic plan is to move the Bell Canadian Open
across the country and to the finest golf venues in Canada. This will be the
first time in almost 40 years that this championship has been held in Western
Canada. Shaughnessy is regarded as one of Canada's premier courses and we look
forward to working closely with the City of Vancouver and the club," said
Ross.
"We are particularly excited that the tournament is moving to Vancouver,
British Columbia and Quebec during our three year sponsorship," added
Sheridan. "We think it's very important that the Bell Canadian Open be truly
national and that means bringing the tournament to as many Canadians as
possible. The fans in Western Canada and Quebec have been strong supporters of
Canadian golf and this gives them an opportunity to host another Canadian PGA
event."
"Shaughnessy G&CC is renowned for its colourful history and numerous
contributions to the game of golf," said Jim Sced, President, Shaughnessy Golf
and Country Club. "We are very proud and extremely delighted to be selected as
the 2005 host club for the third-oldest national open championship in the
world."
This year, the world's best professional golfers will be competing for
