Angus Glen to host 2002, 2007 Bell Canadian Open

Major clubhouse renovation, new course added as club
prepares to host its first Open championship

TORONTO, May 29 /CNW/ - The Royal Canadian Golf Association announced
today that Angus Glen Golf Club in Markham, Ont. will host the 2002 and 2007
Bell Canadian Open Championships.
A goal of the RCGA's long-term strategic plan, announced in 1999, was to
rotate the Bell Canadian Open across Canada in order to raise the stature of
the tournament as a truly national championship and bring some of the best
golfers in the world to golf fans throughout the country. Moving the 2002
event to Angus Glen reinforces the association's commitment to implement that
plan.
"The RCGA is excited by the prospects of hosting Canada's national open
at one of Canada's premier public golf facilities. Angus Glen will provide the
Bell Canadian Open with the course, the spectator space and the clubhouse
facilities that our event demands," says RCGA executive director Stephen Ross.
"Toronto-area golf fans will experience the Bell Canadian Open in a new and
exciting form when it returns to Toronto in 2002."
The current 7,400-yard course at Angus Glen will host the 2002 PGA Tour
event. Built by Arthur Stollery and opened in 1995, the course was ranked Best
New Golf Course in Canada by Golf Digest magazine. With the completion of a
new 50,000-square-foot clubhouse expansion-scheduled to begin construction
later this year-Angus Glen will provide Bell Canadian Open spectators with
more clubhouse space than ever before.
Now operated by Stollery's daughter Laurie Stollery MacLachlan and son
Gordon Stollery, Angus Glen is also building a new championship course, in
consultation with the RCGA. This new course should be ready for play in the
2001 season. The new course, designed by Jay Morrish and Doug Carrick, will
serve as the host site for the 2007 Bell Canadian Open, pending PGA Tour
approval upon its completion. Angus Glen has worked closely with tournament
organizers to turn this course into the best possible venue for Canada's
national open championship.
"We are very proud to be partnering with the RCGA and the Bell Canadian
Open," says Gordon Stollery. "When he built Angus Glen, my father's goal was
to create one of the most challenging and enjoyable courses in the country and
he compromised at nothing to do so. He would be incredibly proud, if he were
here today, to know that his course will host Canada's premier golf event."
Bell Canada has worked in partnership with the RCGA to execute its long-term
plans for the Bell Canadian Open, including rotating the event across the
country, raising the stature of the event, increasing the championship purse
and working to secure a summer date for the tournament.
"I am very proud that the Bell Canadian Open will be making its debut at
Angus Glen," said John Sheridan, vice-chair, Bell. "The decision to bring the
Bell Canadian Open to Angus Glen is part of a larger plan that will ensure
that Canadians across the country have the opportunity to view Canada's
national championship live. As the title sponsor of Canada's premier golf
tournament, showcasing the Bell Canadian Open at championship links across the
country fits perfectly within our overall marketing mix."
The first Canadian Open took place in 1904 at Royal Montreal Golf Club
and the national championship has been hosted at 36 different courses across
Canada since then. The total purse for the 2000 Bell Canadian Open will be
$3.1 million US (approximately $4.5 million Cdn.). Hal Sutton will defend his
Bell Canadian Open title in 2000 at Glen Abbey Golf Club in Oakville, Ont.,
from September 4-10.
