Bell Canada to Conduct Consumer Trial of Net2Phone Voice over IP Technologies TORONTO,Oct. 5 2001 --Bell Canada (TSE, NYSE: BCE) today announced a
preliminary agreement to conduct a consumer trial of Net2Phone's managed Voice
Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technologies. The trial, scheduled to begin in
late 2001, seeks to utilize some of Net2Phone's voice-enabled services and
technologies among a variety of devices available to Bell Canada customers.
Internet Protocol (IP) is a universal way for diverse devices and
networks to communicate with one another. VoIP or IP Telephony converges voice
and data over a single, integrated network to offer value-added services such
as voice-enabled chat, unified messaging and on-line video conferencing.
"We look forward to collaborating with Net2Phone, the pioneer and
recognized leader in the emerging field of voice services on IP networks, to
provide customers with more communication choice and identify the kinds of
VoIP value-added services that most appeal to them," said Pat Tremaine,
vice- president, Bell ISP. "As part of the BCE family of companies Bell is
committed to harnessing the power of connectivity, commerce and content
delivered over the Internet and maintaining the quality of service and privacy
that our customers have come to expect."
"Bell Canada delivers some of Canada's largest telecommunication
solutions and we are confident that working with Bell, the benefits of VoIP
technologies can be translated into other quality value-added services for
Canadian businesses and consumers," said Scott Andersen, EVP of worldwide
sales for Net2Phone.
"Once the inherent security and quality of service for VoIP, as well as
the interoperability among various Internet appliances are established, we
believe that this technology will form an important component in the
convergence of voice, video and data networked applications over the Internet
and Enterprise networks," added Brad Fisher, director, product development,
Bell ISP. "Together with other members of the BCE family of companies such as
Sympatico-Lycos, Bell Mobility and Bell Globemedia, we want to harness
evolving IP applications to provide Canadian consumers and businesses with
greater communication options, innovative entertainment choices and increased
productivity."
