TELUS Mobility, Nortel Networks Plan to Trial First Phase of 3G Wireless Technology

CALGARY, Alberta, May 30 /CNW/ - TELUS Mobility and Nortel Networks
(NYSE/TSE: NT) plan to work together this year to test cdma2000 third
generation (3G) digital radio technology expected to offer Wireless Internet
services that are faster and more reliable for users and more cost effective
and profitable for service providers.
Another significant step in Nortel Networks' plans to aggressively roll
out fully packetized, end-to-end network solutions for a new, high-performance
Wireless Internet, the trials are expected to take place in Calgary beginning
this summer and will feature 1XRTT, the first phase of cdma2000.
Using a Unified Networks solution from Nortel Networks and advanced
consumer mobile devices, TELUS Mobility and Nortel Networks expect to test the
performance, interoperability and operational characteristics of high-speed
wireless data services.
"The next generation of wireless voice and high speed data services holds
great promise for providing unprecedented levels of convenience, reliability
and productivity, especially when it comes to making the Internet mobile,"
said Arnie Stephens, vice-president, strategy, TELUS Mobility. "Trials such as
this with Nortel Networks will be an important step in helping us deliver on
that promise. And the expected improvements to voice capacity and quality will
assist TELUS Mobility in meeting the continuous demands in voice service
growth."
"A key location for both companies, Calgary will be ideal for this
trial," said Dave Buffett, TELUS, major account vice president for Nortel
Networks. TELUS Mobility's wireless service coverage includes Calgary, and a
Nortel Networks' global systems house for wireless infrastructure solutions is
also located there.
"We expect to further our strong relationship with TELUS Mobility, and to
extend our leadership in delivering advanced wireless voice and data solutions
with the reliability and speed-to-market our customers need to compete today
and tomorrow," Buffett said.
cdma2000 1XRTT digital radio technology is expected to support data
transmission speeds up to 144 kilobits per second (kbps) or 10 times the speed
commonly available today. cdma2000 3XRTT should ultimately offer speeds up to
384 kbps for mobile and two megabits per second for stationary applications.
"TELUS Mobility was the first company in Western Canada to launch a
Wireless Internet offering, called i-Web Data Services, and we will maintain
this market leadership position by actively investigating opportunities to
evolve our wireless network and capabilities towards third generation wireless
offerings," Stephens said.
