The 50 Best Employers in Canada Report on Business Magazine's Seventh Annual Ranking of the Nation's
Happiest Workplaces
TORONTO,Dec. 23 2005 ---
Today, Report on Business magazine releases the
seventh annual list of The 50 Best Employers in Canada. This year's Top 50 is
a diverse group, ranging from car rental companies like Enterprise to
retailers like Wal-Mart, a multinational often portrayed as a foe of labour
rather than a friend. Also in the January issue: a profile of Energy Savings
executive chair Rebecca MacDonald; an introduction to the new OSC chief David
Wilson; and expert opinions on how to tell if an expensive stock is worth the
price.
The top five companies in this year's 50 Best Employers ranking:
1. Cintas Canada of Mississauga, Ont. The uniforms and laundry business
makes its 50 Best début in the top spot. All 1,585 employees of the
company enjoy RRSP contribution matching up to 20%, and newly hired
managers are offered a course in "corporate culture," which is
reinforced with weekly meetings, newsletters, videos and visits from
senior leaders.
2. Wellington West Capital Inc. of Winnipeg. Unranked in last year's
50 Best, Wellington is a financial services company employing
330 people, all of whom are offered a share ownership program.
Senior management at Wellington receive direct feedback from
employee committees.
3. EllisDon Corp. of London, Ont., takes third place, up from ninth
last year. The construction company employs 1,020 people, many
of whom attend EllisDon University to learn company programs.
Employees are given a great deal of autonomy and the company
emphasizes promoting from within.
4. G&K Services Canada Inc. of Mississauga shoots up to fourth spot
from its 44th place ranking last year. The uniforms and laundry
business hosts summer barbecues for its 1,941 staff members, and
employees enjoy supplier discounts on everything from cars to home
and auto insurance.
5. BC Biomedical Laboratories Ltd. of Surrey, B.C., which ranked first
in the past three years, has had the same CEO for 12 years. The
company offers its employees job sharing, no interest computer loans,
pension plans and discretionary financial support in times of
hardship.
Rounding out the top ten in descending order: Bennett Jones LLP
(Calgary-based law firm); Microsoft Canada Co. (Mississauga-based software
company); PCL Constructors Inc. (Edmonton-based construction company);
Envision Financial (Langley, B.C.-based financial services company); Edward
Jones Canada (Mississauga-based brokerage firm).

identifies three common characteristics of Canada's best employers that have
emerged over the past seven years of the rankings: leadership; coaching for
success; and a recognition culture. Pick up the January 2006 edition of Report

The 50 Best Employers in Canada survey is conducted by Report on Business
magazine and Hewitt Associates, a leading global human resources outsourcing
and consulting firm. The rankings are determined from the results of surveys
sent to approximately 1,500 organizations. The surveys comprise a detailed
questionnaire distributed to employees, a comprehensive human resources
practices survey and a leadership team survey for top executives. Hewitt also
examined how closely employees' and leaders' goals are aligned, and whether
workplace practices and programs reinforce that corporate vision.
