CTV's "The 2003 JUNO Awards" bigger than Grammys with 2.2 million viewers Shania, Avril and CTV amongst big winners as Junos see 53% increase over
last year
TORONTO,April 7 2003 --Sunday night's broadcast of The 2003 JUNO Awards
at the Corel Centre in Ottawa on CTV drew 2.2 million viewers (2+), as
confirmed today by both Nielsen Media Research and BBM. That represents a
53-per-cent increase in viewership when compared to last year's JUNO broadcast
(1.4 million viewers), the first ever for CTV.
At 2.2 million viewers, the JUNOS eclipses this year's Grammy Awards
(Feb. 23, 2.1 million viewers) taking the crown for Music Awards Shows in
Canada.
A closer look at last night's audience increases over last year reveal a
21-per-cent increase in the Adults 18-49 demographic and a 29-per-cent
increase within the Adults 25-54 demographic. In fact, more than half of the
total viewership could be found in these coveted demographics (A18-49: 1.14
million viewers; A25-54: 1.22 million viewers).
"Canadian music, Shania Twain and a star-studded array of Canadian talent
make for an unbeatable combination," said Susanne Boyce, CTV President of
Programming and Chair of the Media Group. "And for Canadians everywhere, it
was a magical night."
By night's end, BBM confirms that 6.2 million viewers tuned in to watch
some part of the star-studded show hosted by superstar Shania Twain.
CTV's Red Carpet arrivals pre-show, CTV at the Junos, was also a clear
winner last night, winning its 7 to 8 p.m. time slot with 751,000 viewers,
outdistancing even the finale of Popstars (518,000, 7-8 p.m).
The 2003 JUNO Awards was hosted by Shania Twain and featured performances
by a star-studded list of artists including top-nominee Avril Lavigne, Blue
Rodeo, Our Lady Peace, Remy Shand, Sam Roberts, Swollen Members and Tom
Cochrane.
