Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawk Josh Alexander Wins TSN Russ Jackson Award TORONTO,Nov. 30 2001 --TSN announced today that Josh Alexander of the
Wilfrid Laurier University Golden Hawks is this year's recipient of the TSN
Russ Jackson Award.
The award, which recognizes the CIS football player who best exemplifies
excellence in academic achievement, community service and outstanding play,
will be presented at the Vanier Cup luncheon today at the Westin Harbour
Castle Hotel in Toronto. Alexander receives a $3,000 educational bursary and a
plaque emblematic of his achievement as this year's award winner.
Alexander, from Kitchener, ON, is a third-year Business Administration
Major with a 10.1 GPA (out of 12). He was named an OUA First Team All-Star and
was a Golden Hawk Captain this season.
In addition, Alexander was two-time conference all-star, a two-time MVP,
and has won rookie of the year, lineman of the year, and defensive player of
the year. He was CLFL Defensive MVP of the 1999 League Championship and a
member of Team Ontario in 1996, winning the national championship.
Alexander also has numerous volunteer commitments including the WLU
Athletic Council, Heart and Stroke Foundation and coaching minor football.
TSN will broadcast the 37th Vanier Cup, Canada's university football
championship, on Saturday, Dec. 1 beginning at 5 p.m. (ET) from the SkyDome in
Toronto. Rod Smith will call the play-by-play with Jamie Bone and Glen Suitor
providing analysis. Reporter Paul Hollingsworth will cover the field,
reporting on the top-ranked Saint Mary's University Huskies the University of
Manitoba Bisons.
