TSN to broadcast World Cup of Soccer for the fifth consecutive time Coverage begins with FIFA World Cup official draw on Saturday, Dec. 1
TORONTO,Nov. 29 2001 --TSN has acquired the rights to broadcast the
2002 World Cup of Soccer from South Korea and Japan with a comprehensive
schedule that will include 59 live games and nearly 200 hours of total
coverage.
"TSN is thrilled to continue its tradition of delivering to Canadians the
World Cup of Soccer, the world's largest and most anticipated single
international sports event," said TSN President Keith Pelley. "Our coverage
will be comprehensive with a significant package of live games as well as pre-
and post-game reaction, commentary and analysis."
Beginning June 1, 2002, Vic Rauter will anchor TSN's coverage of the
World Cup tournament, kicking off a month-long competition that will see the
world's 32 top nations vying for soccer's ultimate championship. Live games
will be broadcast in the late evening and early morning hours in Canada, as
the matches are being played in South Korea and Japan. Key matches will be
repeated for day-time viewing whenever possible. TSN has carried the World Cup
of Soccer on four previous occasions -- from Mexico in 1986, Italy in 1990,
the United States in 1994 and France in 1998.
TSN will have live coverage of the World Cup official draw beginning at
5:30 a.m. ET this Saturday, Dec. 1 from Busan, South Korea. The draw, which
determines first round opponents for the competing nations, will be repeated
for three consecutive hours following the initial live broadcast. Suneel Joshi
and Dick Howard will anchor TSN's coverage of the draw. Howard, one of
Canada's foremost soccer analysts, will offer his perspective on how various
nations are expected to do as a result of first round match-ups.
SportsCentre on TSN will have preview feature reports and profiles of
players and teams from the eight groups during the two months leading up to
the start of the competition. ESPN Classic Canada will also complement
coverage of the World Cup with encore presentations of past championships as
the event draws nearer.
