The Globe and Mail to offer digital edition of print newspaper via NewsStand, Inc.

Canada's National Newspaper To Expand Reach of Print Edition with New
    Distribution Channel

TORONTO and AUSTIN, TX,Oct. 24 2001 --The Globe and Mail, Canada's
National Newspaper, in conjunction with NewsStand, Inc., a publishing
technology provider, today announced that a digital version of the complete
daily print newspaper is now available for download via NewsStand's digital
distribution service. Information on subscriptions can be obtained
www.globeandmail.com/subscriptions.
The digital version of The Globe and Mail will be an exact replica of the
print edition of the newspaper, including advertisements, photographs and full
articles. The NewsStand version of The Globe and Mail will allow the reader to
perform keyword searches and utilize zoom features to automatically resize
articles and photos for easy viewing.
With the introduction of this digital edition, the full Globe and Mail
newspaper can be delivered to a reader's digital doorstep anywhere in Canada
or around the world every morning.
"The NewsStand edition of The Globe and Mail represents our continued
commitment to innovation," said Phillip Crawley, Publisher and CEO of The
Globe and Mail. "NewsStand's technology allows us to deliver The Globe and
Mail in a digital format and gives our readers one more way to get the quality
news and information they have come to expect from us. Simply put, the
NewsStand edition of The Globe and Mail is a winning proposition for all sides
- readers get the complete paper in a familiar format, advertisers reach a
wider audience and The Globe and Mail builds customer loyalty."
The Canadian Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) will count copies of the
newspaper that are delivered electronically through the NewsStand service as
paid circulation. ABC United States has also agreed to count NewsStand-
distributed editions of print newspapers as paid circulation.
The Globe and Mail joins an impressive roster of international NewsStand
clients, which include The New York Times, The Harvard Business Review, The
International Herald Tribune, The Scotsman, The International Express, The
Australian, The Sunday Times (South Africa) and The Press (New Zealand).
"As consumers continue to embrace the Internet and digital media as
viable channels for gathering news and information, it will be crucial for
publishers to explore different methods of distributing their publications,"
noted Stuart Garner, chairman of NewsStand, Inc. "The Globe and Mail has
accepted this challenge and we look forward to helping them serve the needs of
their readers worldwide in the months to come."
The digital edition of The Globe and Mail is the latest technological
innovation by The Globe, which in 1979 became the first newspaper in the world
to produce a full text commercial database, and was the first to publish
electronically and in print on the same day. The Globe broke more ground when
it launched its Internet operations in the early 1990s and established leading
Web sites including globeinvestor.com and workopolis.com, and developed
globeandmail.com which combines selected newspaper content and breaking news
written by a dedicated editorial staff. Now The Globe is the first newspaper
in Canada to introduce digital delivery of the print product via a NewsStand
edition.
