Jane Goodall in Toronto on her 'Gombe 40' World Tour TORONTO,Oct. 15 2001 --Dr. Jane Goodall, internationally renowned
anthropologist and environmentalist, will be speaking to Canadian media on
Thursday, October 18 at a special press conference to launch the Toronto leg
of her Gombe 40 World Tour.
It has been forty years since Dr. Goodall began her groundbreaking work
in the Gombe National Park in Tanzania. Today, her efforts extend beyond
research to protecting the remaining wild chimpanzees and improving the lives
of those in captivity.
At the press conference, Dr. Kerry Bowman, a bioethicist from the
University of Toronto, and Juno-award winning singer Chantal Kreviazuk, will
join Dr. Goodall to discuss Canada's involvement in the current bushmeat
crisis. The commercial bushmeat trade is an immediate threat to numerous
endangered species and the conservation of the wildlife population in Africa.
Dr. Bowman, who is featured with Dr. Goodall in Discovery Channel Canada's
probing and provocative production, Bushmeat (airing Sunday, November 4, 8
p.m. ET/9 p.m. PT on Discovery), has been a dedicated and committed force in
the protection of great apes since 1982. Dr. Goodall has officially lent her
support to Dr. Bowman and his colleagues.
While in Toronto, Dr. Goodall will be receiving an honorary degree from
Ryerson University. She will also deliver a public lecture at Massey Hall on
Thursday, October 18 and host the Roots & Shoots Festival at the Ontario
Science Centre on Saturday, October 20. Roots & Shoots is the Jane Goodall
Institute's humanitarian and environmental program for youth. Founded in
Tanzania in 1991, the program has since spread to almost 70 countries around
the world. The Jane Goodall Institute Canada gratefully acknowledges the
support of the Discovery Channel in making this event possible.
