Kirk LaPointe Joins CTV as Senior Vice-President, CTV News

TORONTO,Sept. 29 2000 --Trina McQueen, Executive Vice-President of CTV
Inc., today announced the appointment of Kirk LaPointe as Senior Vice-
President, CTV News, effective October 16. LaPointe will be responsible for
all news and information programming including Canada AM, W-FIVE, CTV News
with Lloyd Robertson, the regional news operations, Internet news services, as
well as CTV Newsnet, Canada's 24-hour all-news network.
    "Kirk will lead CTV News through a period of competitiveness and change.
All three Canadian English-television networks have announced plans to
strengthen and improve their national news. As well, additional regional news
and information specialty networks will be introduced.  The increasing
popularity of online news could mean fundamental rethinking of information
delivery and retrieval," said McQueen. "Kirk has the strategic skills, and the
online experience to make sure CTV is the Canadian leader -- nationally and
locally -- in this changing world. And he is also strong in the basics: high
journalistic standards, excellent news instincts and solid management
experience."
    LaPointe said: "CTV News has a distinguished history of serving viewers

changes."
    Reporting directly to McQueen, LaPointe's duties will include maintaining
and enhancing the quality of CTV News programming while ensuring reporting is
balanced, fair and independent. He will lead CTV News towards the integration
of Internet and broadcast technologies and through the adoption of progressive
newsgathering techniques.
    LaPointe has more than 20 years of journalism experience, with a
distinguished track record in both print and broadcasting. Prior to joining
CTV, he was Associate Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of The Hamilton Spectator,
where he also managed the paper's online presence. From 1998 to 1999, he was
Executive Editor of the National Post, responsible for helping with the launch
of the daily national newspaper and National Post Online. In 1997, he built a
resource Web site for journalists that supplies useful Web links. LaPointe has
held numerous leadership positions including Editor-in-Chief and General
Manager of Southam News (1995 to 1996); and Ottawa Bureau Chief and General
News Editor at The Canadian Press (1991 to 1995). He attained his broadcasting
experience at CBC Newsworld from 1989 to 1995 as a host and journalist for a
variety of CBC programs. LaPointe graduated from Ryerson Polytechnical
Institute with a degree in Journalism.
    CTV News with Lloyd Robertson is Canada's number-one newscast, with a
year-round average of more than one million viewers nationwide and a ranking
in the Nielsen top 20. This year, CTV News was honoured with four of the six
network television awards at the prestigious RTNDA Awards (Radio-television
News Directors Association). The Canadian Association of Journalists gave CTV
News an investigative reporting award for an unprecedented fourth year in a
