BCE Brings ComboBox to Final Stage of Development

Bell Canada Enterprises Teams with ExtendMedia
to Build Applications for Interactive Set-top Box

MONTREAL,Oct. 31 2001 --Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE) today announced
it has successfully entered the final stage of development of its ComboBox
convergence product, working with ExtendMedia to integrate a variety of
applications that will provide BCE customers with easy access to a suite of
advanced interactive services.
The applications being developed by BCE and ExtendMedia will enable
ComboBox customers to explore Sympatico-Lycos' optimized portals, send and
receive email, use instant messaging, play games, watch and record, create
personalized programming, surf the web and receive an electronic program guide
(EPG) -- all through the use of their television, remote control and wireless
keyboard.
"Bell has a proven commitment to connecting our customers with the full
benefits of convergent initiatives," said Tom Hope Chief Technology Officer
for Bell Canada. "By leveraging our corporate strengths in media, telecom and
e-commerce, we're offering our customers more choice, more control and more
advanced tools to manage the communications, information and entertainment
they want to receive."
BCE has contracted ExtendMedia to assist with a review and analysis of
current and emerging interactive technologies, applications and services that
make effective use of new media properties to deepen the customer connection
to the BCE brand. Under the contract, ExtendMedia has evaluated the browsers,
middleware, applications and technology required to design and deliver BCE's
user-friendly, interactive set-top box.
ComboBox supports BCE's convergence strategy by integrating the content,
connectivity and commerce assets of the BCE family of companies to deliver
more value to its customers. The ComboBox service works by delivering Bell
Globemedia content over an innovative technology platform that combines Bell
Sympatico High-Speed Internet service with Bell ExpressVu digital satellite
television.
"BCE and ExtendMedia share many of the same ideas and visions of how
convergent projects and interactive services will evolve over the next 12 to
18 months," added Keith Kocho, President and CEO at ExtendMedia. "We're
confident that this partnership will be beneficial for both companies as,
together, we transform the way customers maximize their communications,
information and entertainment."
In addition to ExtendMedia, BCE is also working in conjunction with
EchoStar Communications Corporation to develop the interactive set-top box.
