Global One Selects Nortel Networks Solution for Global Internet VPN

BOSTON, May 30 /CNW/ - Multinational telecommunications carrier Global
One has selected a Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) solution for its Global
Internet VPN (Virtual Private Network) service.
The Nortel Networks Contivity Extranet switch will enable Global One,
which operates one of the world's most far-reaching ATM-based networks, to
offer corporations fully-managed services for fast, secure and reliable data
transfer over VPNs using standards-based tunneling and encryption.
"Addition of Nortel Networks' Contivity to our Global Internet VPN
service ensures that we will be able to meet our customers' needs for secure
transmission of their data via VPNs over the public Internet," said Sybil
Newman, director, IP services for Global One, which provisions voice, data and
IP services to businesses, consumers and carriers from 1,400 network access
centers in 65 countries.
"Global One needed a reliable and secure solution to support its Internet
VPN service and Contivity is helping them to offer a complete eBusiness
solution," said Scott McFeely, vice-president and general manager, Contivity
Extranet, Nortel Networks. "This relationship further underscores our
commitment to deliver a new, high-performance Internet, and to help our
customers remain competitive."
With Nortel Networks' Contivity Extranet switch, Global One's Global
Internet VPN service can enable new business opportunities through secure
communications between suppliers and customers.
Reliability is enhanced with 'failover' capability, which keeps critical
information intact by automatically rerouting data traffic to a back-up device
in the event of network downtime. The Nortel Networks Contivity Extranet
switch can also redistribute traffic evenly across VPN connections to reduce
or eliminate delays during periods of heavy network traffic.
Nortel Networks' Contivity products combine IP tunneling (L2TP, PPTP,
IPSec, L2F), authentication (hard and soft tokens, Radius, X.509,
internal/external LDAP, NT domain), encryption (DES, 3-DES, RC4), routing,
firewall filtering, bandwidth management and system management to provide
secure, scalable solutions for private communications, commerce and
collaboration.
Up to 5000 simultaneous connections are supported for both individual
dial-in users and routed branch offices, allowing businesses to connect new
users easily.
For remote access, Nortel Networks' Contivity Extranet switch supports
Microsoft Windows(R) 95, 98, 2000 and NT environments, and includes an easy-to-
install and configure software client. This client software is designed to be
connection media independent, allowing users to connect via analog modem,
ISDN, cable modem, DSL or dedicated connection.
Nortel Networks is a global leader in telephony, data, eBusiness, and
wireless solutions for the Internet. The Company had 1999 U.S. GAAP revenues
of US$21.3 billion and serves carrier, service provider and enterprise
customers globally. Today, Nortel Networks is creating a high-performance
Internet that is more reliable and faster than ever before. It is redefining
the economics and quality of networking and the Internet through Unified
Networks that promise a new era of collaboration, communications and commerce.
