Nortel Networks Enhances Reunion Portfolio to Extend Broadband Wireless Leadership

Showcases Benefits in Live, Commercial Demo
With Teligent at Wireless 2000 in New Orleans

NEW ORLEANS, Feb. 28 /CNW/ - Continuing to build on its first-mover
advantage in broadband wireless access, Nortel Networks (NYSE/TSE: NT) has
enhanced the flexibility of its Reunion broadband wireless access product
portfolio with additional digital radio technology suited to delivery of
high-bandwidth voice, data, multimedia and Internet services to small
businesses and single tenant buildings.
Announced in conjunction with Wireless 2000, the annual conference of the
Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association (CTIA), the Nortel Networks
Reunion product family now offers ATM (asynchronous transfer mode)-based TDMA
(time division multiple access) solutions as well as FDMA (frequency division
multiple access).
Working with Teligent, a global leader in broadband communications
offering its digital SmartWave service in 40 major US markets including New
Orleans, Nortel Networks is also showcasing the benefits of the Reunion
portfolio as part of its Wireless 2000 exhibit (Booth No.6131) at the Morial
Convention Center.
``Extending our Reunion architecture to leverage the advantages of
multiple access technologies can create significant competitive advantage for
our customers,'' said Mike Andreatos, vice-president and general manager,
broadband wireless access, Nortel Networks.
``With our open architecture and evolution to IP (Internet Protocol), we
have clearly positioned Reunion as a key enabler of the new, high-performance
Internet for competitive carriers in the local access market,'' Andreatos
said.
Nortel Networks' Reunion portfolio -- the industry's first broadband
wireless access system in commercial service -- closes the cost and capacity
gap between more expensive, high-speed fiber trunks and lower-bandwidth copper
cable solutions for small to medium-sized businesses.
Nortel Networks Reunion systems provide `first-mile' access from customer
premises to public networks for high-bandwidth, carrier grade service, using
point-to-multipoint radio operating at frequencies ranging from 24 to 42
gigahertz. They are designed for quick, easy installation, speeding time to
market and allowing operators to realize timely return on investment.
Using ATM-based TDMA technology, Nortel Networks' Reunion provides a
flexible solution for bandwidth on demand, typically more cost-effective for
small businesses and single tenant buildings. For multi-tenant buildings and
businesses requiring dedicated bandwidth, Nortel Networks' Reunion using
ATM-based FDMA provides an effective solution.
Nortel Networks is a global leader in telephony, data, eBusiness, and
wireless solutions for the Internet. The Company had 1999 U.S. GAAP revenues
of US$21.3 billion and serves carrier, service provider and enterprise
customers globally. Today, Nortel Networks is creating a high-performance
Internet that is more reliable and faster than ever before. It is redefining
the economics and quality of networking and the Internet through Unified
Networks that promise a new era of collaboration, communications and commerce.
