Bell Canada awards $125,000 to ten graduate students from across Canada

    Graduate Scholarship Plan in celebration of Bell's 125th anniversary

MONTREAL,Nov. 8 2005 --- Bell Canada is pleased to announce today
the winners of the Bell 125th Anniversary Scholarship. The Plan, which was
announced earlier this year, is a cornerstone of Bell Canada's 125th
anniversary celebrations.
    Bell has awarded $125,000 in one-time graduate scholarships to full-time
Canadian students pursuing post-graduate degrees at universities across
Canada. Each of the ten recipients receives a one-time scholarship of $12,500
to continue their studies at a post-graduate level (Masters or Ph.D.). The
scholarships have been awarded to students studying in a variety of fields
including wireless communications, photonics, satellite communications,
computer science, cryptology and sociology.
    "Bell is delighted to announce the winners of the Bell 125th Anniversary
Scholarship today. We congratulate the ten individuals who were selected from
an outstanding group of 273 candidates," said Patrick Pichette, President
Operations, Bell Canada. "The graduate scholarship plan reflects Bell's
longstanding and continuing commitment to support education and academic
research in Canada," added Mr. Pichette.
    The scholarship provides the recipients with the opportunity to advance
their ideas, to connect with other innovators and to create new networks of
possibilities. This research and innovation is critical to our country's
future.

    The winners of the Bell 125th Anniversary Scholarship are:

    - Jaewook Chung, University of Waterloo, Cryptography
    - Rene Gagne, Ecole de technologie supérieure, Microélectronique
    - Lukasz Golab, University of Waterloo, Computer Science
    - Yair Linn, The University of British Columbia, Electrical Engineering
    - Eddie Ng, The University of Toronto, Photonic Networks
    - Rudi Phillion, The University of Calgary, Satellite Communications
    - Yaser, Fallah Pourmohammadi, The University of British Columbia,
      Electrical Engineering
    - Michael Riediger, Simon Fraser University, Engineering Science
    - Benoit Turgeon, Institut national de recherche scientifique,
      Reconnaissance Automatique De La Parole

    The scholarship plan winners were invited to a conference sponsored by
Bell University Labs in Montreal today and were presented with their
scholarships at a ceremony during the conference. The scholarship is tenable
for one year and is non-renewable.
    The graduate scholarship plan was administered by the Association of
Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC). A committee of university
representatives chosen by the AUCC from across Canada evaluated the
applications and selected the recipients.
