1. What's happening?

  • Bell Canada and the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services have launched www.bell.ca/amberalert, which allows the public to register their e-mail and/or cell phone SMS text message number
  • Upon an Amber Alert being issued, registered users will receive an instant notification via e-mail or text message
  • Bell Canada's Ontario-based employees and subsidiaries will automatically be notified when an Amber Alert is issued.

2. What is an Amber Alert?

  • The Amber Alert Program is used during the early stages of a police investigation to quickly convey to the public detailed information concerning abducted children in imminent danger, and, where available, information about suspect(s).
  • The Ontario Amber Alert Program is a voluntary cooperative plan between the OPP, the Ontario Association of Broadcasters, law enforcement agencies, the Ministry of Transportation, and Bell Canada.
  • Electronic highway traffic signs, Ontario Lottery Terminals, the media, and Bell Canada help communicate when an Amber Alert is issued
  • The Program's goal is by broadcasting information to the public, it will assist in the safe return of abducted children through public observations and reports to the police.

3. How does the process work?

  • The public signs up at www.bell.ca/amberalert, enters their e-mail address and/or cell phone text message number, and selects which region(s) of Ontario they are interested in receiving an Amber Alert
  • Upon an Amber Alert being issued, registered users will receive an instant notification via e-mail or text message
  • Bell Canada's Ontario-based employees and subsidiaries will automatically be notified when an Amber Alert is issued.

4. How much does it cost?

  • This is a free service to the public.

5. Do you have to be a Bell Canada, Bell Internet, or Bell Mobility customer to subscribe to this service for free?

  • You do not need to be a Bell Canada, Bell Internet, or Bell Mobility customer to register for the Amber Alert instant notification
  • Bell Canada is not charging the public to register or receive Amber Alert notifications

6. Is it compatible with all e-mail and cell phone providers?

  • E-mail and text messaging services, compatibility, standards, and charges may vary by service provider.
  • Bell Canada is not responsible for any delays, charges, or other service issues by other carriers
  • Please check with your service provider for details on your rate plans and compatibility.

7. What is the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services and the OPP's involvement with this initiative?

  • The OPP, a division of the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services, coordinates the Amber Alert Program within the Province of Ontario.
  • Upon issuing an Amber Alert, the OPP immediately notifies Bell Canada, the media, the Ministry of Transportation, and other organizations of an Amber Alert.

8. What is Bell Canada's involvement with this initiative?

  • Bell is managing the internet site, sign-up page, database, and notification process for registered users. Bell is also using the electronic messaging on its payphones to publicize how to sign up for Amber Alert notification.
  • With approximately 24,000 employees in Ontario, many of them technicians on the road throughout the province, Bell Canada is also automatically notifying its employees and its subsidiaries of an Amber Alert.
