We offer a full range of wireless voice and data communications products and services to residential and business customers across Canada. We also provide an array of Value Added Services (VAS) such as call display and voicemail, e-mail and video streaming, music downloads, ringtones and games, as well as roaming services with other wireless service providers. Customers can choose to pay for their services through a monthly rate plan (postpaid) or in advance (prepaid).
Our wireless division, Bell Mobility Inc. (Bell Mobility), provides wireless communications services nationally under the Bell Mobility and Solo Mobile brands. In addition, we have 100% ownership of Virgin Mobile Canada which allows us to offer wireless services under the Virgin brand across Canada.
Our wireless network offering includes 1xRTT, EVDO and HSPA and provides voice services and data services to Canadians.
In 2002, Bell was the first carrier in Canada to deploy single-carrier radio transmission technology (1xRTT) wireless network also known as 2G. As of December 1, 2009, the 1xRTT network covered 98.2% of the population across Canada.
In 2005, continuing to lead in network innovation, Bell was the first carrier in Canada to deploy a 3G wireless network with Evolution Data Optimized (EVDO) . EVDO is a wireless radio broadband protocol that delivers higher data download rates suitable for high-bandwidth download applications such as enterprise virtual private network (VPN) computing, music transfers and video streaming. In addition, during 2007, we began deploying technology that enables EVDO revision A (EVDO Rev A) services. EVDO Rev A is the next generation of EVDO technology that further increases peak data transmission download speeds. EVDO Rev A also enables higher system capacity and improved quality of service support for data applications. As at December 1, 2009, our EVDO Rev A network footprint covered approximately 89.6% of the Canadian population.
In November, 2009 Bell has announced the availability of a new High speed network – giving Bell clients access to the largest (covering over 1 million square kilometers), the fastest (peak speeds of up to 21 mega bits per second) and the most reliable (fewest dropped calls and clearest reception) high speed mobile network. Bell’s new network will mean robust international roaming for global travelers and access to the world’s hottest new smartphones and other mobile devices. Operating alongside the EVDO network – the largest high speed mobile network across North America – HSPA will truly mean that Bell can offer the best of both mobile worlds and devices that goes with it. The investment also confirms the company's migration path to the global Fourth Generation (4G) Long Term Evolution (LTE) standard.
